Asbestos is a type of fibrous mineral silicate that belongs to amphibole and serpentine groups of rock forming minerals. The main types include crocidolite, chrysotile & amosite (brown white and blue asbestos). In our country of Australia there was more chrysotile than amphibole mined until 1939. Around 1937 mining started at Western Australia in the town of Wittenoom and crocidolite was the main material until the mine closed in 1966. There was still some being imported from South Africa and Canada after closure of mine. Asbestos use was at it's highest in 1975. In many products asbestos is the binding materia. It was so reliable that it was added to about 3,000 products all around the home and small amounts in vehicles.

 

Previously human exposure to asbestos was at high levels in some industries and occupations, especially those around the asbestos mines. Tradesmen installing the material were also exposed, but not as much as those that worked in the mines. People who have had extended exposure to asbestos materials are at risk.

 

Even today, it is unknown whether which amount of asbestos can be tolerable. That is why it is vital to have an inspection for asbestos on most buildings.
